Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10

External hard drive (a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus in my case) unmounts automatically when spinning down.
The HD effectively disappears from the system.

The drive functions normal in 9.04

Same with my Maxtor and a western digital ext HD. Ubuntu really needs a patch or a small program for dummies like me to set drive spindowns to not unmount ext HDs makes backing up near to impossible and I don't think just not buying these 2 major barnd ext HDs is the answer if Ubuntu wants to keep users from returning to windows, thanks

Hello
Have you tried to run a s.m.a.r.t. test of the drive with disk manager
Thanks

No I haven't how is that done? And this is a well docvumented problem of Seagate and Maxtor driuve that powert down to save energy and this causes an unmount in Linux. Mine both will power down if even a few seconds pause happens.

I have the same problem in Maverick. My external hard disk is a Packard Bell. After a variable time 3-8 hours the HD is unmounted.
Is there any workaround waiting for the fix?
