Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

I have upgraded my Karmic from KDE 4.3.2 to 4.3.3. Everything worked like a charm. But on Nov, 17 there was a Ubuntu upgrade (Kernel 2.6.31.15, Xorg, ...). After that I've done a reboot an my system hang at starting the login manager (KDM). I have the same behavior on my laptop an on my pc. My laptop uses intel graphics and kernel based mode setting. I can't reach any console. The screen is blank or has some stripes. The only thing I can do is a shutdown via power button. On my pc I get the message that x could not be startet and some options will be shown with low screen resolution. If I choose the failsafe one the KDM starts as usually and the screen resolution is changed to full (1980x1200). The pc has a NVidia graphics card build in. If I choose the GDM as default everything woks fine. No errors, no freezes. What is happend? It seems that KDM has some troubles but why?

Most likely the xorg update that broke things.

Hi jan-rauberg,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old) from after reproducing the issue?

Ok, I setup my pc at home (Corei7-860, 8GB, GeForce7600GS) with a fresh Karmic installation. After installing KDE 4.3.2 everythings was fine. Yesterday came some xorg updates and finaly my pc won't start correctly. I use the KDM and everytime when it tries to start I get the message, that the xserver couldn't start and it offers me some options. When I choose the failsave mode the xserver starts again and it runs as if nothings happened before. What is this? I use only supported repositories. I use Ubuntu for some years as my produktion system, but such troubles I never had before. I thing such worse things may not happen. My Thinkpad runs only with GDM and my PC too. With GDM I can't use any suspend mode from KDE. I love my KDE and I want to use it with the matching KDM! Sorry, but I'm really frustated.

I can confirm this on my macbook 1,1 with an intel GMA950. X broke after some update: I also had only stripes on the screen and this even affected all tty consoles. I could only boot back into a console by first chrooting from a live CD and removing kdm. The problem seems indeed xorg/driver related rather than something in KDE, since starting gnome/fluxbox/... also does also not work.

Booting into a previous kernel (2.6.31-14), which worked fine before the update also had a broken X after the update.

This might indeed be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/491483

I did have gdm installed but was using kdm, which might have caused the problem.
