Bug Description

Hello,
I have a compaq CQ-50 135em, I am almost sure it has a card with 5007eg atheros chipset. But the system recognises it as a 5001. Well, it has a button on the top of the keyboard (http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/22001102/Images/2/CQ60-100.jpg) this is the cq60, but the button in the photo is the blue one. In linux 9.04, it did not recognise the button and the card was always switched on. Now, the button works, but as it doesn't change of colour, I don't know if it is switched on or not, and that is worst than not working.

I tried to configure it myself, but as I don't know so much of linux, I have to report this bug. If you need some more info, or whatever more, do not hesitate to contact me,

<email address hidden>,

Javier Domingo

Hi txomon,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 485067

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello once more, I installed ubuntu, the new version, lucid, and it got worse. Now, the light I told you that was red is always blue, but whatever I do, I cant neither see wireless access points. No way.

I tried with ndiswrapper, but it got fixed till I suspended, because when I returnt, and now on, when I start the computer, NetworkManager disappears at the begining, until I can do anything, and it is imposible to connect from ethernet too.

I am desesperated,... and why is this bug incomplete¿?

Unless you have exactly the same hardware as this bug report shows, please file a new bug for your issue, by opening a terminal and typing:

ubuntu-bug linux

and hitting enter. Thank you very much. It will make it much easier for the developers to fix your specific issue that way.

Hello,
I have installed Ubuntu-10.10 fresh and clean. And nothing has been fixed... now the light, doesn't change of color (it is always in blue) and it still doesn't connect. I would provide more logs, or kernel messages, but I don't know how to put it in debug mode. I have basic kernel programming skills (basic, know how to write in /proc and in /dev and little few more things), so you can give me instructions to debug it, or I can compile a kernel that enables more debugging.

Best Regards,

Javier Domingo

I have a similar problem with the atheros 5001 card.
Wireless worked in Maverick but not in Natty.

For Me:
If I plug in the Ethernet cable to a active port (switch box or hub or modem or crossover to another computer) it also activates the wireless. Sometimes immediately, and sometimes after a minute, but it always works if I do this.

Thank You in advance.

txomon: Let me make sure I have the facts straight from the our irc discussion. When you boot, 'rfkill list' shows that you have a soft block on both the phy0 and hp-wifi devices, correct? And your wlan hotkey toggles the state of the hard block on phy0 but not the soft block?

What I suspect is that the hp-wmi driver is setting the state to blocked based off of what it reads from the bios during initialization. To prove this, try temporarily blacklisting the hp-wmi driver by adding the line 'blacklist hp-wmi' to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. Then reboot, verify that hp-wmi isn't loaded by running 'lsmod | grep hp-wmi', and check the rfkill state with 'rfkill list'. After you're done you can remove the line you added to blacklist.conf. Please report your findings here. Thanks!

I first want to say that there is something strange here, now its working, I reboot, and continues working.

If I press the button for wifi, there appears a hp-wifi hard block, and If I press it once more, it is removed.

As if the problem never existed. There is still something strange, as the wifi button works as those lights that inform about wifi activity, it is switching automatically between blue and red when wireless connection is active.

For the moment, the problem has dissapeared... But I don't know when will it come back
