Bug Description

Binary package hint: pppoe

I updated Ubuntu from Breezy to Dapper and since, I cannot connect to internet. I get the message : "Linux kernel does not support pppoe. Running kernel 2.4.x ?"
But my kernel is 2.6. I ran pppoeconf, it works, but the same message appears after the tool closed.
lsmod shows : pppoe, pppox, ppp_generic.

Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release, or even better the developent version of Ubuntu,Hardy Heron?

Thanks in advance.

I think this error is a false positive, I mean, I'm also getting it whilst running Ubuntu v8.04.1, pppd v2.4.4 with the 2.6.24-21-generic Kernel.

The problem, I think, is a permissions issue. Not long ago, I accidentally ran chown (Recursively) on my /usr directory, hehe, not realizing the gravity of it's affect...

Anyways, I think this is a left-over of that mistake. Perhaps, a binary related to PPPoE is not setuid or setgid properly?

P.s: I work around this issue by using sudo in a user account who's a member of admin (Or, is it adm?)

Sorry for posting to such an old thread, but thought I'd add some info.
