Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

I had the same problem, and I tried to disable all my extensions and re-enable them one by one. The one causing the problem is "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications". Is is great for integration with apt, but it enforces the layout of the UI... We should report it as a bug of the extension. Meanwhile, disabling it works like a charm.

Thank you for the update. I tried adding some icons to the same bar as the URL closed firefox 3.5 and then restarted. The new icons stayed. I had Ubufox installed at the time. Perhaps another extension is conflcting with ubufox? Could you please be more specific about the modifications you are making so that we can have a proper test case?

You're right, it's not Ubufox alone : I also need to have TabMixPlus (http://tmp.garyr.net/) activated (v0.3.8.2, with the default settings or my cutomized ones) for the bug to appear. If only one of those two is activated, the customization works. I did not try every combination of extensions (I have a dozen installed), but it may appear with other extensions, as the attached extension summary does not list TMP. Is there any other information that I can provide to help the qualification of the bug ?

I confirm the bug with the "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications"
UI layout was forced to default, until I was disabled this plugin.

Reporter's ExtensionSummary shows this isn't Tab Mix Plus related.
