Bug Description

My kernel is 2.6.31-6.slh.2-sidux-686. I have inkscape 0.47pre2-2 installed in my sidux system. When I start, it says

inkscape: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgiomm-2.4.so.1: undefined symbol: g_file_io_stream_get_type...

When I make dpkg -i libglibmm-2.4-1c2a_2.16.4-1_i386.deb, inkscape starts. But then apt always wants to update libglibmm.

This seems to be an issue with libgiomm-2.4 (glibmm >= 2.22), not specifically with Inkscape. Googling the error message shows other applications (VMWare, Gparted, RawTherapee, Inkscape...) with the same problem, and the recommended workaround is always the same: downgrade to glibmm2 (2.18.1).

I only found libglibmm-2.4-1c2a_2.16.4-1_i386.deb in Debian lenny. But when I downgrade, apt doesn't work any more, until I let update libglibmm again with apt-get -f install.

You are right. I have the same problem with gparted. Gparted only starts, when I have downgraded libglibmm. It is not only a problem of inkscape...

I wrote a possible workaround at [1]. Who should have removed those old files? Which package didn't cleaned the old files?

Thanks.

Since this issue is not related to Inkscape and its default installation I propose to close the bug as 'Invalid'. Or you could report it in the bug tracker of your package manager or linux distribution and add a link to that report in the comments here (it will then be picked up by the 'Remote bug watches' feature of Launchpad).
