Bug Description

Binary package hint: gimp

When using gimp-2.6.7-1ubuntu1 in Ubuntu 9.10, GIMP will freeze after a few modifications to an image, most often applying filters such as Drop Shadow. The system will also crash; the mouse is able to move and windows can be moved around the screen, but no buttons or menu items can be clicked. Killing gimp from a terminal does not restore system functionality. Rebooting using telinit 6 brings the system down, but it never reaches login screen. Only a complete power-down of the system allows it to boot normally.

I have this same GIMP bug. I use gimp version 2.6.7-1ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic i386. It seems when I zoom in on a file such as .xcf and use various brushes, the computer will get slower and slower and and everything freezes except the mouse. This happens even when there is still plenty of RAM left. Trying Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does not work and Alt+F2 can't be invoked to kill the frozen gimp package. The user is forced to do a hard reboot and start all over.

I have the same GIMP bug.
EVERYTHING FREEZES no other help than switching on/off the hole system in the hard way.
Using 9.10 Ubuntu 64 bits and GIMP 2.6.7 on a Medion all in one pc.
VERY ANNOYING !!! Please give some priority to this problem.

I can confirm this defect. When applying drop-shadow, my laptop becomes unresponsive and the only solution is a forced shutdown (with the power button). I hope it will be fixed quickly, as GIMP is my main tool for image manipulation!

Laptop: HP Pavillion DV 7 1090ed with 4G memory
Ubuntu: 9.10 32 bits 2.6.7 standard from the package manager

I have also noticed that GIMP will crash when using the Path Tool for any length of time. The whole system will freeze and the user will have to do a complete restart. (Oddly enough, the mouse can still be moved though nothing can be clicked.)

I am using GIMP v2.6.7-1ubuntu1.1 on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic (kernel: 2.6.31-19-generic). I have found that GIMP will completely lock up the computer when a user uses processor-intensive tools, such as the Gradient and Path tools. Zooming into the picture seems to cause the computer to freeze as well. Does GIMP have a log that can be checked if crashes occur?

I can also confirm total machine lock-up during the 'drop shadow'. Yes I can reproduce it, It has happened 4 times in the past 2 hours. Resetting the whole machine was the only option. At one point, I recognised failure was in process and was successful in activating the system monitor and luckily killed the script-fu process, which brought other running applications out of dark grey lock-up.

My set up is as follows...
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, 64 bit, 8gb of ram, 53gb free drive space.
GIMP 2.6.7

To reproduce this follow these steps.

After launching gimp add text to a new image, alpha-to-selection, create new layer, select that layer and choose filters->light and shadow->drop shadow, click (ok) and intermittently watch the system fail.

At some point during the failure a dialogue box is drawn but never populates.
I have grown to adore GIMP, although it has been a long painful process to realize it's capabilities.
I would look forward to this being fixed.

I'm using gimp 2.6.7 and after using Drop-shadow, when I want to save the file it freezes the entire system. I use Ubuntu 9.10... it was really annoying after 4 crashes and I gave up on gimp filters!

The last update to gimp was 2010-01-07. For those still experiencing this issue in Ubuntu 9.10, please run 'apt-cache policy gimp' in a terminal and paste the results here. We do still need a backtrace to see what is failing. Thanks in advance.

Having the same problem. Sometimes it crashes right away. Other times I'm able to apply a couple drop shadows before it crashes again.

The problem of GIMP FREEZING has fully returned in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Lucid Lynx.
It is very annoying and happens usually during use of FILTERS, especially DROP SHADOW.

The point is that it does not happen constantly.
One time it happens with the first photograph,
the other time only until the fifth photo.

Most of the time it causes the computer to freeze completely,
not being able to control any window and to shut down (only the hard way)

I found out that GIMP causes AT-SPI-REGISTRYD to freeze.

I've tried to close down as many applications as possible to see if there is any interference.
But it doesn't have any effect.

BUT WHAT DOES HELP, IS DISABLING OR NOT TOUCHING THE MOUSE DURING THE USE OF FILTERS !
It looks like that (even very subtle movement) of the mouse during running the filter, causes Gimp to freeze.

I hope this will help all of you to run GIMP and to help to rigorously solving this problem.

Ps. GIMP runs perfectly in Windows7.

Got this on latest Ubuntu Natty 11.04 using Unity with Gimp 2.7.3... Happens every time i try to use the Drop Shadow filter. I am able to move the mouse but nothing happens on clicks. The fans start spinning fully. The only thing i can do is to logout with ctrl+backspace och restart with ctrl+delete. I am not sure what log would be appropriate here. If someone could tell me i'll come back with it .
