Sleep and lid buttons don't work in Karmic

The sleep and lid buttons don't do work on my Lenovo Thinkpad R61i running Kubuntu Karmic. I can, however, put the machine to sleep from the KDE Application Launcher without any problem.

Forgot to mention that this is a clean install of karmic, with a brand new /etc folder.

If I close the lid or press Fn+F4 sleep does not work. Both on a IBM R40 and on a Lenovo T200.

suspend via 'pm-suspend' works fine.

Same symptoms on an nvidia graphics based T61. x86_64 ubuntu, new install.

Forgot to mention: This is a regression, it worked fine with 9.04 and 8.10.

This appears to acutally be a gnome-power-manager bug. ACPI is definitely getting the event.
I wrote a script: /etc/acpi/local/lid.sh.pre that does the suspend via:
dbus-send --print-reply --system \
                --dest=org.freedesktop.DeviceKit.Power \
                /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Power \
                org.freedesktop.DeviceKit.Power.Suspend
and suspend on lid close is now reliable.

@Nolan I've been using Kubuntu so it may be that we are not talking about the same issue.

My problem started when I installed Karmic and continued when I upgraded to Lucid, up until today when I discovered that it was simply a question of changing the lid-close action in the Ubuntu power management settings. I'd done a clean install of Karmic, so this must obviously have been the default. I never thought to check something that in hindsight should have been so obvious because it never occurred to me that someone might set "lock the screen" as the lid-closing action. It is something no one in their right mind would do unless they thought burnt-out computers made nice doorstops.

So if the same default is still being applied in Lucid, could I suggest that this default is the bug? It is entirely conceivable that a new user could innocently put the lid down in a hurry, expecting the behaviour they were used to in Windows, and cook their machine.
