Bug Description
Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
CRITICAL ERROR!
I only assume it has something to do with the power-manager,
but I really do not know.
When watching a movie or when not using input devices Karmic powers down.
First, the screen goes black, and most of the time it awakens
when keyboard or the mouse is pressed or moved.
Goes black again, every 10 minutes, for 3 or 4 times.
Then usually the 4th or 5th time of going black, video signal is lost,
sound stops, keyboard, mouse, suspend button are useless.
The PC has to be rebooted to function again.
Its like a silent crash, with no warnings, no crash report.
Power settings are on "Never" put computer to sleep, and
"Never" put display to sleep.
Screensaver is not activated, setting is on maximum 2 hour setting.
The PC and the Monitor should stay powered on indefinitely.
But Karmic not only powers it down regardless but fails to re-power.
THIS IS A VERY CRITICAL AND SERIOUS FAILURE!!
This is without a doubt one of the most frustrating bugs in any
reputable OS.
I was about to recommend Karmic to some clients.
Unless this is fixed quickly, the value of UBUNTU will
drop below Windows XP.
Please do not let it come to this point.
Do not be Lucid before Karmic critical bugs are fixed!

Update on the power-management / ACPI problem:
CTR Monitor I use, is DELL 15 inch E771a.
ASUS P5E-VM HDMI mobo, Intel (82)G35 chipset,
integrated X3500 Graphics Media Accelerator,
Intel Core Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.2GHz,
2 GB DDR2 800MHz Memory,
Intel ALC883 HD audio. AMI 8MB BIOS -
Power management works great under Win XP & Vista.
Under Karmic, when I push the sleep button (suspend)
on my Logitech Media Keyboard, the OSD notifier tells me:
"Action disallowed" "Suspend support has been disabled".
This confirms my settings, that I do not want the PC
to go to sleep, nor the monitor to go to sleep.
Yet, Karmic still puts the Monitor, and then the PC to sleep,
within 10 minutes, with regularity. Eventually video signal
is cut, audio signal is gone, keyboard & mouse fail to
awaken the PC or the monitor, suspend button fails.
Evidently power-management or what ever program
regulates ACPI fails to respond to the settings,
& powers down.
I do not know how to get the attention
of the developers, to fix this Critical error!
I am still confident, that Karmic will be debugged,
Perhaps through Lucid updates.
BavarianPH,
Ubuntu forever!
