Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Old Celeron/G945 system ran jaunty fine. Load karmic from liveCD. After reboot, system becomes flaky (freezes). Notice this happens mostly while opening dropdown menus from the top panel. Change Appearance preferences, Visual Effects to none and problems go away.

Richard, thank you for reporting this issue. If I am reading your system information correctly, I believe you are using a NVidia card and driver. Have you tried to use the nouveau drivers instead? Also, there is a newer nvidia driver available (version 190), but try the nouveau drivers first.

Let us know how if any of this helps you out.

I guess my reference to a G945 wasn't clear. The system I was reporting about used an Intel G945 motherboard chip set with an Intel IGP and the Intel xorg driver. This system is no longer available for testing since it has been used to build a NAS based on FreeNAS.

I guess I got confused by the "nvidia" value for the nonfree modules entry in your description.

Well, because the machine is no longer available for testing, and there really isn't enough information to work off of, I am going to have to set this bug report to "Invalid". Please, do feel free to report issues in the future, and thank you for helping to make Ubuntu better!
