Thank you for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please provide us with steps to reproduce the problem as well as what you think should be happening instead of the errors. Also could you obtain a Backtrace by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace and post it here.

It is very ease to reproduce the problem, try send a messeage in Empathy that including one or more of the swedish caracters åäöÅÄÖ. Then you get the error "Error sending message 'test mä åäö': unknown" in Empathy and the one I send it to don't get the messsage.

Norwegian characters also (obviusly) affected.

We'd like to figure out what's causing this bug for you, but we haven't heard back from you in a while. Could you please provide the requested information? Thanks!

Steps to reproduce : Send a swedish/norwegian character (I imagine a lot of others are also affected, but to be safe use one of those)
What I think should be happening : The message sent rather than an error.

And this isn't a crash so you dont get a backtrace.

This bug was easy enough to understand from the apport, and very easy to understand after post #3.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Johan Lindström (johan-lindstrom) wrote :

For me its possible to send "åäöÅÄÖ" with empathy, but when an ICQ-friend send me a message with these letters I get the message with ÅÄÖ replaced with "?" and followed by an error message:

"(There was an error receiving this message. Either you and xxxxxxx have different encodings selected, or xxxxxxx has a buggy client.)"

I replaced the ICQ-uin with "xxxxxxx"

I tried the same with msn but without problems, so for me it's only when I get ICQ messages.

For those who still face this can they please tell us if this issue is a protocols specific or happens with each and every protocol (i.e. MSN, Yahoo etc) That would be really helpful. Thanks

I don't get any errors, but åäöÅÄÖ is replaced with question marks, just like Johan Lindström.
This problem occurs on IRC (at least on messages between Ubuntu and Windows), but not on MSN.

Oscar, you mean in Lucid if you send those letters in a message they are not delivered? can you please attach your telepathy haze logs when the problem happens.

I wish I could, Removed the package, disturbing me to much, and installed pidgin instead.

The error is as follows:
I can send all messages, even the ones with åäö. And it can be read by the reciver in normal way. The problem occurs when a user sends me a message with ÅÄÖ.

I'm having the identical issue that oytnx explains. My first ubuntu install on a fresh partition with 10.10 and I setup Empathy with my AIM/MSN credentials and everything seems to work fine except for the one issue in MSN which is, out of the 2 people I have tried to communicate with on MSN only one has worked flawless both ways and the other contact it seems they were able to send me an initial message but all my responses are met with the following error: "Error sending message '': unknown". I had initially thought this was due to my display name being in special characters when used on windows live messenger but then that wouldn't explain why I can communicate with contact 1 no problem but not contact 2.
