Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

I have two computers synchronized with Ubuntu One: my laptop and my lab desktop computer.

For my laptop:

gerard@gpujadas:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10

gerard@gpujadas:~$ apt-cache policy ubuntuone-client
ubuntuone-client:

For my lab desktop computer:

gerard@URV-nutrigenomica-01:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10
gerard@URV-nutrigenomica-01:~$ apt-cache policy ubuntuone-client

Description of the problem:

I have been running Ubuntu One without problems during one week but since last 10-11-2009 (just after upgrading from 2Gb to 50 Gb) Ubuntu One does not synchronize (i.e. I have changed the contents of the Ubuntu One folder in my laptop but the Ubuntu One website does not update; moreover, my lab desktop computer does not synchronize also with the contents of my laptop). Nevertheless, it is very strange because apparently when I start a session in Ubuntu, there is a message that Ubuntu One is making the update of thee files (but none is updated). Also the cloud has an exclamation symbol within it and when I select "Connect" (either from the cloud or from the Ubuntu One folder) no connection is made. Interestingly, the files in the Ubuntu One folder of my laptop have the green checkmark. I have made some screen captures and I am attaching them also.

Please, let me know if you need further information

Thanks in advances for your help

Best

Gerard

Hi Gerard,

I'm sorry to hear Ubuntu One isn't working properly for you. Can answer a couple questions for me?

1) Based on the oauth-login.log, it looks like one of the lines may be having trouble getting out through a proxy server. Are you behind a proxy server?

2) How many files are you trying to sync since you've upgraded your account? (It shouldn't matter, but this information will help us narrow down the possibilities of what the cause of this problem is.)

Thank you,

Joshua

No to my knowledge. When I installed Ubuntu 9.10, I made a default
installation and I didn't have to answer to any question relative to the
network. It is true that in my laptop computer I have configured Firefox in
order to be able to have access to the electronic resources of my University
library from home, but usually I have this disconnected. Moreover, my
desktop computer in the University (the computer that it is synchronized
with my laptop) does not have any proxy configured in Firefox (and the
installation of Ubuntu 9.10 was also by default) and Ubuntu One does not
work. Other members of my lab have also installed Ubuntu 9.10 in their
desktop computers and configured Ubuntu One but after using it during some
days without problems now are experimenting the same troubles that I have
described.

The situation of both Ubuntu One folders since last week (more or less) is
the next:

In my desktop computer the contents of Ubuntu One is:
gerard@URV-nutrigenomica-01:~/Ubuntu One/Recerca$ ls -lR | grep ^'-' | wc -l
167
gerard@URV-nutrigenomica-01:~/Ubuntu One/Recerca$ ls -lR | grep ^'d' | wc -l
41
gerard@URV-nutrigenomica-01:~/Ubuntu One/Recerca$

In my laptop computer the contents of Ubuntu One is:

gerard@gpujadas:~/Ubuntu One$ ls -lR | grep ^'-' | wc -l
1
gerard@gpujadas:~/Ubuntu One$ ls -lR | grep ^'d' | wc -l
0

Ubuntu One fails to synchronize even if I only change one file. This was not
the situation the first time I used the program (it works perfectly).
Curiously, Ubuntu One starts to fail after updating my subscription to 50 Gb

Please, let me know if you need further information or if you need to log
into my Desktop computer (if this is the case, I would need the IP number of
the computer that you will use to connect in order that the informatics
administration of my University allows temporally the access).

Please, let me know also when the problem is solved

Hi Gerard,

Thank you for the prompt reply and your detailed answers! I think we're going to need to see some debug logs, which will require you to do the following:

1. Open (or create if it doesn't exist): ~/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf
2. Add the following 2 lines to this file and save:

[__main__]
log_level = DEBUG

3. Restart the Ubuntu One client
4. Let the client try to sync (maybe even add a file to force it to sync)
5. Attach ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon.log to this bug report

Note that attaching syncdaemon.log will show filenames you are attempting to sync with Ubuntu One. If you do not want this to be public, please mark the bug as private and this bug report will only be available to you and the Ubuntu One team.

Thank you,

Joshua

Hi Gerard,

If you don't see the Ubuntu One client in your task bar (because it's hidden), then you can quit it from a terminal session:

Applications->Accessories->Terminal
killall ubuntuone-client-applet ubuntuone-syncdaemon

To start Ubuntu One, you do it by: Applications->Internet->Ubuntu One

Thank you,

Joshua

Hi Gerard,

I've looking at the logs you uploaded, and the last one (syncdaemon.log) shows that the computer is ready to synchronize the content in Ubuntu One folder, but the client hasn't received the "go ahead" order (that would be hitting "Connect" on the desktop applet).

If you could please, do the following:

 * Start the applet, click on Connect, and wait until the synch process finishes.

If something fails, please attach all the logs at the following directory: /home/gerard/.cache/ubuntuone/log/

Thank you!

Gerard,

I'm reviewing your logs right now. The applet is not being able to authenticate with the cloud. I'm forwarding this to the proper manager.

In the mean time, could you please also attach your config for /home/gerard/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf ? One thing you can try is checking if your settings look like this:

[bandwidth_throttling]
on = False
read_limit = -1
write_limit = -1

If you have throttling enabled, please try closing the applet, disabling it, and then reopening and reconnecting the applet.

You can reach me through IRC at freenode on #ubuntuone channel, my nickname is nessita. Please fell free to ping me so we can investigate this issue further.

Thanks!

Dear Naty,

the file /home/gerard/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf is not in my computer:

     gerard@gpujadas:~$ find .config/ -name syncdaemon.conf
     gerard@gpujadas:~$

instead, the contents of the /home/gerard/.config/ubuntuone/ directory is attached

Thus, please, let me know in which file I can made the following:

     One thing you can try is checking if your settings look like this:

     read_limit = -1
     write_limit = -1

Relative to close the applet, disabling it, and then reopening and reconnecting the applet, could you give me the information about how to do it? I imagine that first I have to select the cloud in the panel with the right mouse button and select Close and after go to Applications -> Internet -> Ubuntu One

Is this correct?

Relative to the IRC at freenode on #ubuntuone channel, I have never used it. Could you help me and tell me which application I need to use? Sorry for this

I have to leave now, as soon as I could, I will reply to your questions

Waiting for your feedback

Gerard,

below some answers:

 * if you don't have the /home/gerard/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf file, it means you never edited the preferences, which is ok. It's better if you don't edit those because there is an issue that enables throttling even if the user never explicitly enabled it.

 * To close the applet, right click on the cloud on the systray and then click on "Quit". To re open, Applications -> Internet -> Ubuntu One is correct.

 * To connect to IRC you can use a desktop application, like Pidgin (this is a how to I found on the web http://www.zantherus.com/community/topic/2635-howto-connect-to-irc-with-pidgin/) or you can use a Web IRC client, like this one http://www.mibbit.com/

Anyways, the issue you're experimenting is related to authentication, and this bug report has been already assigned to the proper manager (and I also notify him by IRC :-)).

Good luck!

Gerard,

First, on the lab computer (the one where apt-cache policy shows you using 1.1+r276-0ubuntu1~ppa1~jaunty, the jaunty version from the ppa from before you upgraded to karmic), please do
sudo apt-get install {python-ubuntuone-client,ubuntuone-client{,-gnome,-tools}}/karmic-updates
this will take your client versions forward to the ones in karmic.
Alternatively, if you're feeling brave (although no braver than when you did this for jaunty), you can re-enable the ubuntuone beta ppa (but pointing it at karmic, not jaunty). This has the additional benefit of bringing in some newer fixes, but the added risk of being more bleeding edge.

Once that is done, please report how things go, and if things are still broken we can schedule some 1-on-1 time to get it working again for you.

Thanks for your continuing patience,
