karmic boots into a black screen, no GUI

i currently have 9.04 installed with all updates. i would like to upgrade to karmic. i have tried using the update manager to upgraded but when all is finished and it restarts, it would not boot to the desktop. it just goes to a black screen with a message and stays there. i have also tried to install using an iso cd. i boot the computer with the cd in, and select the language for then install and select install ubuntu. i get to a black screen with a flashing "_" (underscore line) and stays there. i have no idea what the problem is.

burn cd at 4x make sure you check disk for defects.

i havent tried burning it at 4x yet but i have tried to check the disc for defects and it goes to the same black screen with the flashing line and nothing happens.

if you need more info, maybe on my system let me know. although i am running 9.04 at the moment with no problems. if you need system info where would i find that? i will try burning it at 4x.

i have now tried burning it at 4x then installing it. that still doesnt help. im 95% sure im not doing anything wrong. so what is the problem?

A guess: what happens if you press Ctrl+Alt+F7 up to and including Ctrl+Alt+F12? Does that bring you to the graphical environment? If that's the case it's most likely a bug in the X.org server.

We also need some more information before we can process this bug. What graphics card, motherboard, network card and hard disk do you have?
If possible, could you provide us with the files /var/log/Xorg.log.0, /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/syslog of the affected system after you've booted in the blinking underscore again?
