Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I've set up a A VPN connection in Network Manager. To successfully connect I must first reboot my machine. It then connects successfully (indicated by network manager icon).

However, I cannot ping any of the devices on the other network. Furthermore the connection fails after about 2 minutes. I can reconnect, but with the same results

I've attached an extract from my /var/log/syslog file showing the successfull connection and failure.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
IfupdownConfig:
 auto lo
 iface lo inet loopback
Package: network-manager 0.7.1~rc4.1.cf199a964-0ubuntu2
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: network-manager
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-16-generic i686

Hi,

I see a number of issues with the APIC on CPU0. This is likely not related, but you may want to open a new bug about it (and try to see if your system boots with the noapic kernel option).

Also, please make sure that the openvpn configuration you are using is correct:
Nov 11 10:20:17 tatooine nm-openvpn[20271]: Bad LZO decompression header byte: 0
Nov 11 10:20:58 tatooine nm-openvpn[20271]: LZO compression initialized
These messages indicate that you have probably enabled LZO compression in the config, but that it is not enabled on the server. You should see if the connection stays established with compression disabled.

Additionally, these errors indicate similar issues:
Nov 11 10:21:14 tatooine nm-openvpn[20271]: WARNING: 'link-mtu' is used inconsistently, local='link-mtu 1542', remote='link-mtu 1546'
Nov 11 10:21:14 tatooine nm-openvpn[20271]: WARNING: 'mtu-dynamic' is present in remote config but missing in local config, remote='mtu-dynamic'
In both of these cases, you should try to set the mtu options to match the server's, as they should help with connection performance.

Please let us know whether these changes improve your connection stability.

Thanks for filing a bug and helping to make Ubuntu better!

I've since upgraded to 9.10, but my OpenVPN still fails. I tried a couple of days ago and it connected but failed after a while, similar than before. Looking at the logs the problem appears to be similar than before. So hopefully the upgraded did not affect the bug and we can still fix it.

Attached is the syslog of that event.

PS: the APIC errors have disappeard since.

I'm able to connect with OpenVPN without the network manager from the command line, but only as root (using sudo). See two command line outputs for with and without sudo. Maybe this might assist in finding the bug.

This is cli output when not using sudo
