shortcuts with alt key do not work with compiz

On Ubuntu 9.10, Compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu2.

Any keyboard shortcut using the (left) Alt key don't work.

For example Alt-Tab works in Metacity, and doesn't work in Compiz. However, it's not like it isn't pressed : Alt-Tab doesn't act like Tab alone.
In CCSM, when defining the shortcuts, it correctly understands "Alt-Tab" and sets it. I've checked all shortcuts in CCSM, there isn't any conflict.

It seems like the shortcut configuration apps correctly understand the Alt key, but every other app treats it as another key.

when pressing the Alt key, xev returns :

Same in Ubuntu 8.04, Compiz 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu7.

Go to System -> Preferences -> Appearance. Click on Visual Effects tab. Set visual effects to Normal.

The define a keyboard shortcut using either the left or the right Alt key. Shortcut will not work.

Go back to Visual Effects and set it to None and shortcut will work again.
