Bug Description

Hello everyone!

I'm annoyed because after doing a fresh installation of Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) I do not have any sound on my laptop.
What makes me so angry? It always worked without any problems since I had my computer (since Ubuntu 8.04). Now it doesn't! What's going on?

My sound card is (lspci -vv):

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
 Subsystem: Gateway 2000 Device 0366
 Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- DisINTx-
 Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Latency: 0, Cache Line Size: 64 bytes
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 22
 Region 0: Memory at d8240000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
 Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
 Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

aplay -l gives:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I've done some experiment and made some changes in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:
commented out last line as shown below:
# Power down HDA controllers after 10 idle seconds
# options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N

Now I am able to play sounds.

Does it really need to happen? Couldn't it just work as in previous Ubuntu versions?

Instead of commenting out the entire line, try changing power_save_controller=N to power_save_controller=Y (or just remove the power_save_controller=N string completely), then reboot.

I followed your advice and put Y in power_save_controller=Y. It didn't help. I was unable to hear any sound from my speaker. I noticed that in my sound preferences, tab titled "Output" I have only dummy output or something like that.

I commented out that whole line and rebooted. I again noticed that I don't have any sound. So I type in the console

sudo alsa force-reload

and it helped! So I suspect that all is there (all modules etc.) but something is broken in startup scripts or in system configuration.

Now I need to type in that magic command to enable my sound each time I reboot my system. I can add this hack to rc.local but what for? Everything worked in 9.04, 8.10 ane 8.04!

Do you have either of the sl-modem-daemon or timidity packages
installed? You may wish to remove whichever one(s) is(are) installed.

Yes, I had sl-modem-daemon installed (by system installer??). Following your advice I removed that package and rebooted my Ubuntu 9.10. Now, I'm again a happy Ubuntu user with sound enabled during system boot up process.

But I think there is something to be done with this problem/bug or maybe more appropriately spoken - packages conflict. I didn't tamper with anything related to sound or my sound card or modem. Every package (related to sound etc.) was installed in my system by installer. So maybe change something there? If you have any more questions related to this problem, I could try to help you as much as I can to fix this problem.

This sounds bad. Try to upgrade sound drivers and see if that helps. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems/KarmicCaveats#Sound%20drivers%20need%20to%20be%20updated

@surmandal: [ 23.278004] snd_hda_intel: Unknown parameter `5610'
This is likely what causes your card not to be detected. Do you have anything strange in cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf that could be the cause of this error? If in doubt, attach that file.

@Mateusz: The slmodemd bug should already be fixed in Lucid, or by using pulseaudio from the ubuntu-audio-dev PPA.
