Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic

hello

here is iwconfig, wlan1 is the problematic one, wlan2 side-by-side.

wlan2 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Acutron"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:13:F7:E7:51:61
          Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=27 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-17 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

wlan1 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Acutron"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:13:F7:E7:51:61
          Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=27 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=60/100 Signal level=60/100
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

wlan1 displays low signal level and slow speed, wlan2 is internal and was performing much worse and in a buggy fashion before the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. That was the reason I had the smc unit. Now the problem has reversed.

Confirmed on a Karmic 32-bit kernel machine (2.6.31.14-generic), symptoms are the same.

This bug was reported against the linux-meta package when it likely should have been reported against the linux package instead. We are automatically transitioning this to the linux kernel package so that the appropriate teams are notified and made aware of this issue.

If this bug really is a bug in the linux-meta package you can move it back to linux-meta and tag it kj-linux-meta, or contact us on the #ubuntu-kernel channel on the FreeNode IRC server. Thanks.

Under jaunty, this device performed at 54 mbps no problem--what's this regulatory domain stuff? could that be related?! I live in France, but my Ubuntu language is English...

Ok,

I have confirmed that in my case, this IS a regulatory issue; if I use "iw reg set FR" and unplug/replug the USB wireless device, the interface speed is normal (54kbps).

This is still a very annoying bug, since in 9.04, the driver works fine normally, and in 9.10, the configuration is WRONG. This is unacceptable behavior for an upgrade.
