desktop backgroud change is not gradual anymore

Bug Description

Transition from a desktop background to another used to be gradual and smooth in 9.04 which was a very eye pleasing feature. Starting with 9.10 RC, I noticed that this behavior is missing. Now, most of the time backgrounds change suddenly.

Could you please retest this with Lucid? The background change is gradual for me with Lucid.

I've tried it on 2 desktops and the issue seems to have been corrected with Lucid.
