Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

System: karmic 9.10

I want to remove multi-colored icons from gnome-panel menu bar.
Before 9.10 they could be removed by going to appearance -> interface ->show icons in menus
and icons from buttons by "gconf -> Desktop -> Interface -> Buttons have icons"

In Ubuntu 9.10 this doesn't work. Though buttons don't have icons by default
but "half" the menu has it like "Application" & "Places" part even when I uncheck show icons in menus.

live cd, new user all have this problem.

Thank you for your bug report, that's not a bug though, gtk has a flag to say that some icons should always be displayed and it's used in those cases

Changed in gnome-panel (Ubuntu):
assignee: nobody → Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs)
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Invalid

So is there any possibility to turn off the menu icons in the panel menus without altering sourcecode? This was possible in former GNOME versions so thats hardly an improvement.

FEATURE? WOW! I wonder where GNOME is GOING? Now we can;t even customize it the way we want it?

Now what do I have to recompile GNOME, GNOME-PANEL or `upgrade to Jaunty 9.04` or WHAT? ANYONE THERE?

ps:- jesus I used to loved GNOME.

+1 for this bug. Its REALLY annoying and it should be fixed ASAP. Don't know what those Gnome/GTK devs thinking but they're really going crazy nowadays. Beats me whats with them.. (Soon we'll have everything hard coded like ... on that OS. "The freedom of choice" huh?)

+1 for the bug. This is NOT an improvment! I feel like gnome is following KDE steps...
Please don't make the only usable desktop environment worse!

Will this be fixed in 10.04?

I run Ubuntu on a few headless computers with very little RAM and booting off flash drives. Turning off icons helped immensly. 9.10 is in all aspects, except GUI, worse than 9.04. If I could, I would have still be runnig 8.04 today. But sadly one needs drivers...

Maby Lubuntu 10.04 will be my next install.

This also affects me. I hope you can have Gnome/GTK allow users to completely disable icons.

Thanks!

#3 - gnome is going shitty shell way. what means even bigger or giant icons are on their way and even less customization. It seems like GNOME panel and/or classic menu applet are slowly "heading toward planned deprecation" if i may quote linux hater...

+1 for bug - as sitronen said: this is a horrible bug, NOT a feature.
