Howto reproduce this: (Way 1: start command.com)
1: Install Win98 SE with VirtualBox Extensions. (nice 16bits colors visible)
2: Start Guest OS Win98 Second Edition
3: Goto Start => Run and type command, followed by Enter:
4: Expected Result: command-prompt
- Real situation: Totally garbled screen, mostly black, with colorful, interrupted bands (see included screenshot)
Howto reproduce this: (Way 2: Start intensive process):
1: Install Win98 SE with VirtualBox Extensions.
2: Start Guest OS Win98 Second Edition
3: Make a 30MB 7zip-file, include it in .iso file together with 7-zip for easy sharing in Win98.
4: Install 7-zip on host system.
5: Mount .iso made in step 3 and copy file to virtual harddrive
6. Extract large zip using 7-zip:
7: Expected result: 7-zip extracts image and returns user to desktop
- Real situation: Totally garbled screen, mostly black, with colorful, interrupted bands (see screenshot)
Virtualbox keeps showing the Virtual Machine's name with '[Running]' next to it.
Klicking on the screen changes the pattern, as do keypresses, so it looks like the machine is indeed still running. It even gives an audible error when an error occurs. The interface has become totally unusable due to the distortion.

Thank you for posting this bug.
Windows 98SE is in End of Life status. As well, Ubuntu & virtualbox-ose have undergone numerous updates. Please update and repost detailed error report.
