Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Slowly dragging a card in Solitaire crashes my X from time to time (ubuntu 9.10). I have had same experience on 64bit 9.10 system as well. After X crashes ubuntu takes me back to the log in screen.

Here is what Xorg.log says ... ( not sure if copying the right piece but ... )

if there is some other log file that can help, please let me know i will be more than happy to help.

also ... may be it has nothing to do with solitaire but that is the only program that does it on my computer.

Same here with 32bit 9.10, Intel 865G. Also, this bug is similar to #444518 and #469172.

Verified with Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit here.

Processor is an Intel D

Graphics card is an Intel. lspci output is: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

I think it's a 45000 HD or something like that.

Either the computer will crash back to the login screen, or just shut off. I will also be willing to attach any relevant logs; I just don't know which ones would be relevant.

This page appears relevant, as well: http://<email address hidden>/msg1846593.html

I meant to write more information in the comment above, but here it is:

I have a family member who uses Ubuntu exclusively and enjoys playing Solitaire for hours on end.

Her computer has been crashing quite often. I'm not usually around to witness it, but every time I asked, she responds saying that all she was doing was playing Solitaire and she doesn't know what else happened.

Everything was stable in Ubuntu 9.04 with almost exactly the same configuration.

Additionally, Compiz is disabled if that makes a difference.

The computer crashes to login screen.

I will also be willing to attach any relevant logs, I just don't know which ones would be relevant.

Hi tereshkosg,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Happens all the time to my wife who playes spider a lot, to the point where she's regretting updating to karmic. She says that before it happens the cards will seem to stutter when she moves then fast. I tried disabling desktop effects to no benefit. Next, I'll try turning off UXA and go back to EXA. That should do it as UXA is mentioned in the backtrace at the top of this message.

Intel X4500, x86_64.

Also, a gentle nudge, is anyone working on this? The bug is still marked as "incomplete", even though it appears the relevant logs have been attached. If someone is investigating it then please change it back from "incomplete".

sigh. i forgot. EXA acceleration isn't available anymore. It was too stable... not shiny and new enough.

(Yes, I'm aware why UXA is architecturally "better", I'm just annoyed at major regressions in the stability of a highly visible driver, and that there's no way to fallback to the old, stable behaviour.... and I'm annoyed at hearing my wife swear at her computer all the time now... you'll have to excuse my frustration).

Please post if you need any further information. Please note I may have misspoke above.. she has a GM965, which I thought was X4500 based but I could be wrong. Here is her full lspci -nnvvv

I also get this crash quite predictably, any time I play AisleRiot Solitaire for much over 30 minutes.
I've compiled the relevant packages (xorg-server-1.6.4,xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.9.0) with optimization turned off and got a full backtrace of the crash (attached). The relevant bit of lspci:

Some more observations. I've noticed that the memory usage of the sol process grows slowly over time, starting at 33M virtual 16M resident and rising to 44M virtual 26M resident just before crashing.

Also, I just had it crash in a slightly different way. After running sol for a while I switch to another app to check memory usage and it crashed at that point. Once X had restarted I found a core dump of the app I'd switch to (a program of my own). The core dump showed an assert failure in _XAllocID() (libX11:xcb_io.c:378) "assert (ret != inval_id);"

Please look at to bug 465317 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/465317) for more complete dumps on same problem. This bug is probably a duplicate of that one.
