Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-session

For some reason gnome-session doesn't always start. I have to use the xtern session from gdm to then start gnome-session manually (the attached screenshot shows the first messages given by the gnomoe-session command). This issue started after some updates (gdm, xsplash ...).

Workaround: wait up to 2-3 minutes before trying to login (I have no idea what the system does).

Just adding the translations for the error message shown in the screenshot:
"Tallennetun istuntotiedoston x luku epäonnistui " = "Failed to read the saved session file x"

"Tiedoston x avaaminen epäonnistui:Tiedostoa tai hakemistoa ei ole olemassa" =
"Could not open file x: File or folder is missing"

After testing, this bug actually happens to users having an encrypted /home folder and for those having an unencrypted /home folder.

I found this from /etc/gdm/:0-greeter.log

Ikkunointiohjelman varoitus: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0 timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed.

Ikkunointiohjelman varoitus: CurrentTime used to choose focus window; focus window may not be correct.
Ikkunointiohjelman varoitus: Got a request to focus the no_focus_window with a timestamp of 0. This shouldn't happen!

(Ikkunointiohjelman varoitus = window manager's warning)

This bug is actually caused by bug 475935 and that bug fixes this bug.

I was wrong. After disabling encrypted swap and home folder, I can still reproduce this bug.

Removing the regression-update tag - Karmic has had no gnome-session updates since release. If this is a regression due to a stable update, then it's got nothing to do with gnome-session

Maybe this is a regression-update in gdm (I started to get this bug around 2009-11-07).

Marking as dupplicate of bug 454437 since this gnome-session package has not been updated in Karmic.
