Turns out that there wasn't enough space on the boot-partition mounted at /boot.
So no bug, just an inconvenience.

Thanks for your report

I'm closing it because the error was due to "gzip: stdout: No space left on device" . This is not a bug with Ubuntu.
Don't hesitate to submit any new bug.
