Bug Description

<https://launchpad.net/> has a "Translating applications:" box, with a heading that says "Dapper Translations:" but nothing after that.

This bug happens regardless of what browser I'm using (tested in Firefox, Safari, Konqueror, Lynx, and wget), regardless of what operating system I'm using (tested in Ubuntu and Mac OS X), regardless of what country I'm in (tested in New Zealand, USA, and the UK), and regardless of whether I'm logged in.

The bug used to happen only on production <https://launchpad.net>, not on <https://staging.launchpad.net/> or <https://demo.launchpad.net/>; on the latter two, I was shown bar charts for native languages of the country where I was. Unfortunately, the bug now happens on all three hosts.

<http://launchpad.dev> is more complicated: with Opera or Internet Explorer I get bar charts for South African languages, but with Firefox the charts are missing.

This is probably the same underlying problem as bug 2718.

Couldn't reproduce. Both show the bar chart for my preferred languages.

I've now reproduced the bug both in New Zealand (where staging shows Māori, but production shows nothing), and in the USA (where staging shows Spanish and Yiddish, but production shows nothing).

In case it matters, I'm using Safari 1.3.2 on Mac OS X 10.3.9.

You're supposed to be on vacation. Stop working now! :-)

It seems the code is trying to guess your preferred languages looking at the HTTP headers or based on your IP address and somehow on productions it's returning None.
Do you have any preferred languages set? Are you logged in?

I don't have any preferred languages set, but the problem also occurs when I'm logged out, so I don't think it's anything to do with my account. And since the problem occurs with production both in NZ and in the USA, while staging returns an appropriate result in both cases, I don't think it's anything to do with the particular IP address. It's (a) some difference in the way production and staging are set up, and (b) an error in the template that it shows a heading even when there aren't any languages.

Yes, fixed by removing the box. (Bug 2718 is still a problem, though.)
