Bug Description

after installing ubuntu one acer aspire one in the form the /boot is made on the internal SSD and /root on the memory card of the netbook. i cannot boot. this reason is that the modules for the memory card are not in the initrd. to resolve this i have to insert my memory card into a usb card reader and then start. after starting i add mmc_core mmc_block sdhci sdhci-pci to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and update-initramfs-u. after doing that i can boot jaunty or karmic. so i think this is the time that this should get fixed in lucid lynx

the above links are all the references to the solutions available on the internet but my solution is the simplest to add modules to the initrd out of box

I don't think this is something we want to support out of the box, is it?

Good question. Why are you installing your /root to the memory card...separate from /boot on your local SSD?

if i install /root on the ssd my system is almost dead. the ssd is so slow that if you install ubuntu on it. then if you install any app from the terminal unless the app is installed the system won't give you response. in the same way whether its chromium or firefox the browsing experience is non responsive and installing ubuntu on the memory card makes everything just fine. and also if i paste or copy something in the /home directory e.g. music or pictures system again becomes non responsive. from jaunty to karmic cycle i have tried many all the available and many installs but non did the trick. just installing on the memory card make everything fine

I'd much prefer to address the performance issue with your SSD then grow the initramfs with modules for what I consider to be a unique installation environment. Could you install to your SSD, install all updates (including one in -proposed), install the pybootchartgui package, reboot *twice*, and then attach the .png files in /var/log/bootchart to this bug? We may be able to determine why you are having so much trouble with your SSD.

Sure, and we give you the ability to configure your initramfs generation such that you can add the additional modules you need (as you have done). This configuration will last as long as your system is installed, and will never be overwritten by us.

Your case is pretty unique, I don't think we need an out-of-the-box option for it - it's fine to add the modules to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules as you've done.

i did what i was told and installed it on the ssd. the dist-upgrade after downloading all packages it took almost 22minutes to install those updates. normally that happens in less than 10mins. then i install pybootchartgui and rebooted twice but nothing happened. mean no folder named bootchart was created so neither any file in that folder. but the performance is as i expected the system becomes non responsive very often.

before installing karmic today, my system was installed with Lucid. so should i install lucid on the ssd instead of karmic? as updates come daily

Ah, I'm running into the exact same scenario... Although its not an EEEpc, I'm running it on one of the new sony vaios... om26er gratefully directed this to me, and I'm attempting to find an sdcard reader for this purpose. On IRC you may know me as Hannibal..

@Scott James Remnant, i have the suggestion that these modules should be dropped on Desktop install but should be provided on Ubuntu-netbook-edition and also in lubuntu(somebody at lubuntu mailing list also asked about this feature) as both are for low end systems.
