Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

ubuntu 9.10, 64-bit, compiz 0.8.4-0ubuntu2, compizconfig-settings-manager 0.8.2-0ubuntu1. Intel GM965/GL960 integrated graphics card.
I installed compizconfig-settings-manager for the first time and started adding a few effects. I enabled a few 'animations' and then the 'animations add-ons'. I tried to enable the 'reflection' effect and my screen immediately locked up. No keys seemed to work, and I had to power down my laptop by holding down the power button. When I restarted, after logging in (actually I am set to auto-login) the screen locked up again while the desktop was still loading; again, no way out but to hold down the power button to power off. I got to a recovery shell and removed compizconfig-settings-manager, but the computer still locked up on the next boot. I got to the recovery shell again and added "export WINDOW_MANAGER=metacity" to the end of my ~/.bashrc, and was finally able to get back to my desktop.

After filing the defect, I attempted to replicate it: as soon as I tried to enable the 'reflection' effect, things locked up again. The actual behavior, though: I could move the mouse (I'm using the trackpad on my laptop, not an actual mouse) but couldn't click on anything or use any keys, e.g. ctrl-alt-f2 didn't do anything. Again, I had to reboot. When I returned, the reflection effect was _not_ enabled.
