Firefox URL-completion prevents URLs from being entered

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Using firefox 1.0.8-0ubuntu5 on the Dapper Drake release candidate (updated as of 20060530T2045Z), when the URL-completion dropdown for the main URL bar is displayed with potential completions, keyboard input of characters into the URL bar is not accepted. If no partial-match completions are visible, keyboard input proceeds as expected.

To reproduce:

1) Visit, e.g., www.google.com

2) Open a new tab

3) In the new tab, attempt to enter, e.g., www.amazon.com into the main URL bar

Expected results:

www.amazon.com can be entered normally, with the completion string containing www.google.com being displayed until the first 'a' of amazon is entered.

Actual results:

Once the initial 'w' is entered, further characters may be accepted only by clicking the mouse on the text entry before typing each character, until www.a has been entered, disambiguating the new URL from existing history.

The version number above is incorrect, pulled from the wrong system -- it should read 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.3-0ubuntu3. This problem persists after 6.06 release.

Much more experimentation shows that the problem lies in Firefix+UIM interaction. If UIM is configured to use an input method other than "Direct" by default, the URL bar misbehaves thusly. (It does not matter if the user does not start UIM directly, firefox invokes uim-input-helper itself.) This means that Firefox cannot be used with UIM in any Asian input mode, for example.

Is this still and issue for you? We are trying to trying sort out the older Mozilla issues and would like to know if this still happens. Please try version Version 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.9-0ubuntu0.6.06 first if not already there. To find out the version please run in terminal "apt-cache policy firefox" without the "

Unfortunately, I believe that all of my systems are now 6.10. I will check, and if I can verify this bug, I will.

Sorry, it took so long between first report and a request for verification that I no longer use UIM -- I will check this on a more recent build if I get a chance, but so far real life has interfered.
