Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Hello.

I’m using Ubuntu Karmic and my laptop doesn’t want to shut down : when I click on the graphical interface “Shut Down”, it yields my logout, but then nothing appenned : I just returns to gdm. It produce the same result when clicking on “restart”...

I try to type “sudo halt -f” on a terminal.
Bash just write one line, and then it return to a normal state, as I’ve just type “ls” or something like.
Here are the line written :
halt: relocation error: halt: symbol __abort_msg, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference

It doesn’t disturb me for now, while I use the hibernate option — which works perfectly well.

I just find it suspect, and I prefer to repport the bug.
I’ve use ubuntu-bug, so I think additionnal informations has been added to this post.

Hoping that it will help the community.
Martin.

Hello.

Some news with this problem.

I’ve shut down my computer using hardware (I've push ten seconds the shut down button).

Now, it is just unable to switch on :
I try to boot it in recovery mode with the two kernel installed in my computer.
Both of them crash.

In the ten last lines of booting, I've seen a message similar to this one :
halt: relocation error: halt: symbol __abort_msg, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
Then it was written that the Kernel parnic.
Then some error lines.
Then the computer just stops : the screen stays with those error printed, but do not change.

That's now a problem for me.
I think I will have to reinstall Ubuntu in that laptop...
Is there a way to install a new kernel without booting the computer with an old kernel ?

I attach some informations, because I'm in the same computer, booting on a live-CD — I hope it could be useful...

Martin.

summary: - Karmic seems not to able to shut down in my laptop.
+ Karmic isn't able to shut down in my laptop, nor to switch on!

I think you’re right.

The error is the same and I think it’s the same cause.

But the consequences are different. If I’ve well understand you’re bug, after upgrading (in fact, there we have made the same thing), your computer switch on, but wasn’t able to launch the Xserver... But I think a terminal was opened ?

In my computer, nothing works. The switching on raise a Kernel Panic and nothing was launch.

But I think it’s the same cause.

Now, I’ve re-install Ubuntu (Karmic), but with an other version (amd64 and not i386).
Now the system works perfectly well. I made a mistake of architecture when first installing, but now it works.

I’ve seen in you’re bug that you’re in i386.
Maybe you’re computer is an amd64 ?
In that case, we could focus on that for the bug (?)...

Martin.

My dilemma is very much like Martin's post #7 above

My computer, (i386, original install of jaunty, then upgraded to karmic, now with latest kernel updates) just developed a similar problem after attempting to update all application pkgs in synaptic.

Synaptic completed most but not all the application upgrades even after repeating the exercise several times.

However, everything ran completely OK -- until I tried to reboot.

Choosing the latest version of karmic in GRUB. led to a screen frozen with the Ubuntu logo.

Trying 'Recovery' mode in GRUB resulted in some activity which halted with this msg :

.... /sbin/init: relocation error: /sbin/init: symbol __abort_msg, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! ....

The computer then just freezes with the screen displaying the above error msg.

The foregoing results occurred no matter which version of karmic one chose, ie, the earlier installed karmic kernel versions. A power off hard reboot is then necessary to return to GRUB.

I am sending this post via a Fedora LIVE CD. My karmic install -with all its installed applications and data files- is unusable.

Would be grateful for a quick solution. I hope it does NOT involve a total new install of karmic
