any update to this bug... I am having the same issue (I believe...)
semi-newbie... fresh install of edubuntu 9.10... (went to bed) and woke up
to the machine stuck at 800x600 max resolution. no etc/X11/xorg.conf created.
manually attempted... and got so frustrated with nothing working.
so decided to attempt ubuntu 9.10 itself. again went to bed while formating the drive...
and woke up to the same scenero... and whenever I do the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg... nothing appears to happen.. (and it didn't touch my xorg.conf file).

What log files do you need exactly? I am at lucid and have this problem, though using xorg-edgers packages.

This is not a bug, but the expected behaviour; in almost all cases X no longer requires an xorg.conf. dpkg-reconfigure no longer creates an xorg.conf, so it doesn't ask any questions.

If you want to create a basic xorg.conf you can use “sudo X -configure”, which will write out an xorg.conf matching your current hardware. In Ubuntu 10.04 you will also be able to put configuration snippets into /etc/xorg.conf.d

What kind of answer is that? There are many people with non-functional karmic systems, stuck at the comman line, no X system, no mythtv, no whatever, and that is the best that you can do?

I've reloaded everything I can think of and looked at megabytes of log files and and if this is your idea of expected behaviour maybe you should be writing viruses and trojans, because it is very effective!

Thanks Chris. I can confirm that suppressing the xorg.conf file and rebooting is working! I was quite surprised ;-)
Therefore, this bug does not affect me anylonger.

@Rick Bryce: This is not a forum for support requests, but a tracker to fix defects in the software that makes up Ubuntu. The fact that dpkg-reconfigure no longer writes out an xorg.conf is not a defect. In the vast majority of cases X can better detect the appropriate configuration than what we had in the reconfigure hooks.
