happened while installing restricted extras on a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 - note however that I'm also getting a message that the harddisk i'm installing onto is failing. It's possible that this is related.

when I try to install any program by synaptic package manager .. the system refuse to do that .. this is the message : Unable to get exclusive lock

This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first.
