I am using Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala - released in October 2009 and supported until April 2011.
The crash occurred 'behind the scenes', not sure what package may have provoked. For the period during which the crash may have occurred, I was using jEdit, SUN jdk1.6 (javac, java), and GNOME terminal. I didn't notice any malfunction associated with the crash.
I may also have accepted some updates offered by Update Manager.
