Bug Description

Binary package hint: ekiga

On ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 bit edition with Pulse Audio, I am trying to make a sound test (echo test). Than the CPU goes into 100% of usage. Going out from ekiga generates crash. No audio in ekiga. I think the problem is with supporting Pulse Audio.

Hi,

Would you be kind enough to check if the issue is the interaction with Pulse Audio?

The test I propose you is to disable pulse audio, then try to place a call to see if it makes any difference:

First kill pulseaudio:
$ pulseaudio -k

Remove the pulseaudio package:
$ sudo aptitude remove pulseaudio
(it will probably remove the meta package ubuntu-desktop, please note down any other package as you might need to reinstall them)

Run the Monitor System application (under Administration->Monitor
system) and make sure there is no pulseaudio process in the Process tab.
If it is there, kill it.

Run (or restart) Ekiga
Place the call using Ekiga.

To reinstall the system you can use:
$ sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop

And finally restart pulseaudio:
$ pulseaudio -D

Best regards,
Yannick

Hi,

same hang on accepting incoming call
(amd64, ubuntu 9.10, ekiga 3.2.6)

switching 'default (ptlib/alsa)' audio settings
to 'hda intel (ptlib/alsa)' seems to solve it

Best Regards

Hi,

I just installed 9.10 on a new consumer laptop, an HP DV4-1548dx. It has the above problem, with integrated audio and also with selecting a bluetooth headset.

My Dell Mini9, with 9.10 (remix) works fine with Ekiga.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is a hardware problem.

I tried to remove pulse audio as above, but the sound applet said it could not find any devices, so I installed ubuntu-desktop again.

I'm willing to try things.

I found the deciding factor on both the HP-DV4 and Mini9. For Ekiga to hang and use 100%, Ubuntu merely needs to have a bluetooth dongle plugged in. NO pairing needed!

Happens with both laptops... and with 2 different Bluetooth dongles. One of which has no history of pairing on either install.

Reproducible.

I switched to Linphone. It works fine with a bluetooth dongle plugged in. It also works with a bluetooth headset!

Thnx flowdi.. changing to 'hda intel (ptlib/alsa)' solved the issue for me
