Thank you for your report. We have noticed that the slmodem daemon has been causing conflicts, and disabling it often allows sound to work again for many users.

Same problem here with the SmartLink modem daemon on Ubuntu 9.10 (both upgraded from 9.04 and installed from scratch), on a Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S7020D with an hda-intel card.
After reinstalling alsa with the hda-intel option (which is anyway necessary to get the sound working), if I keep the SmartLink daemon installed I cannot neither change volume from the Gnome taskbar, nor find any sound device under gstreamer-properties: audio works but its properties can be changed only via alsamixer.

Ok, invalidating against sl-modem and alsa-drivers, as it appears that this bug report should be marked as a dupe of bug 450222 instead. This bug report is listed as having a fix released. Unfortunately, the complete fix is very big and is unlikely to be backported to Karmic Koala (9.10). The problem is solved for the next release.
