jaunty->karmic upgrade fails due to held broken packages

Binary package hint: update-manager

Using update-manager to upgrade jaunty to karmic, fails with "An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.", but I can find no evidence of what package it thinks is broken, nor any evidence there is a broken package:

Synaptic package manager, reports no broken package, orphans, etc. Have removed all packages from third-party repositories.

Have previosly run 'dpkg --configure -a', rebooted. 'apt-cache dump' shows no non-jaunty packages.

Here is the relevant bits from the log, it appears there is a problem with the resolver. Could you please attach /var/lib/dpkg/status ? I will try to reproduce the problem with that file.
