Bug Description

Ok tired of Kubuntu plasma bugs I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10. Excuse my english please:

I downloaded ISO of Ubuntu 9.10 and burned with Ubuntu 9.04 CD buerner "brasero" in a previously CD-RW with Ubuntu 8.04. First CD burner blanked CD. After burned ISO.

When starting Live CD without altering HD option loading stopped and terminal screen appear showing jumped 2 "non-existing" files so I restart and did a check integrity od data CD. All OK load again and the same thing. I typed GDM and finally Ubuntu splash screen appeared. Desktop loaded but a little crash icon appeared in upper bar right. I clicked and found a kernel error messaje appeared. I follow instructions and the system gathered information but I dont see it now..

Perhaps Ubuntu 9.04 CD burner tool burned wrong my CD-RW? If in terminal appears that supposedly 2 files are missing why data integrity option don't show it?

I add 2 screenshots of what I did (in spanish) to burn the Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD

1st:
Download ISO, right click on it and select burn CD. Brasero window appear and I select prevuious CD-RW, in that case Ubuntu 8.10.

(when I send this post error 505 appeared and i can't access to web)

2nd
As CD-RW had Ubuntu 8.10 when Brasero app started to burn it advice me. I click Erase disk and then started to burn without allowing me to select burn speed so I think burn it to max.

3rd
I installed Ubuntu 9.04 From Live CD and open Brasero instead of right clicking on the ISO. Erase the CD-RW containg the apparently bad burned Ubuntu 9.10 and BEFORE burn it, select 24X in speed burn (dont allow less ! as is a CD-RW not a CD-R). After burning Ubuntu 9.10, restarted and Live CD loads well. I select Test CD from menu and after some lines the screen dont failed and finally and without typing gdm splash screen with Ubuntu bar loading appeared ! Then Gnome appeared.

4th
As testing Live CD worked well I restarted and clicked Install on menu. Again the same first screen error ! I restarted AGAIN and selected test without altering HD and again the screen end with a console lines telling 2 nonexisting files...

Im gonna install Nero 7 in my Windows XP partition and rere-burn again the Live CD so perhaps Nero allow me to reduce the speed to minimum of the CD-RW 16X instead of 24X

I rere-burned CD-RW with Nero 7.10 at minimum available speed for that type of CD: 16X and after several boots the same crash again so I formatted the cd with Nero InCD as UDF and lost 125 MB ! Now CD-RW has 575 MB and I can't burn the ISO again ! I tried to delete it with InCD and Nero and its imposible so I restarted with Ubuntu and deleted with Brasero. I restarted again in Windows and 1st didn't recognice it then 700 MB. I burned with Nero and whrn restaring and loading Live CD delays a lot and finally again appears the same problem, lines of text. So any burns and deletions ruined my CD-RW ? Its a brand one Verbatim so has quality...ill see Verbatim or Nero Web to check number of burnings and correct ways..

Add:
That CD-RW has less than 1 year and has burned only 10 times...In a rapid google search in forums i see that a CD-R/RW can be burned almost 1000 times so I can't understand it..

excuse me for my typing i did it rapidly...

Ok I emailed Nero support to ask for help as I think that part of the problem is the media of data. I visited too Verbatim web and search for my type of CD-RW (in spanish): http://www.verbatim.es/es_9/product_cd-rw-24x_122.html

So it is confirmed that CD-RW can be burned at last 1000 times and my CD has few scratchs as has been stored in a paper sleeve (as comes from a 10 CD spindle, not individual) but I dont thnik that is for it, I think that perhaps some part of the problem is the action did it for the software InCD...now I understand why Nero 7 has disabled his option to install it in basic mode installation...mm..

I'll search in google or Wikipedia for extra info and wait for technics has to say to discard hypothesis...

Nero has answered me but appears that they don't have enough time to read completely my mail and talked me of Nero 9 ! So I repeat him that im using Nero 7 and wait again.

I emailed LG support too cause perhaps my CD drive is too old..its a GCE-8520B from 2003 and i flashed it with last firmware (1.04) in 2007 so I asked if any new version came out.

While im waiting i disconnect the CD drive and connect it to DVD drive and I burned 3 times with a new CD-RW in TAO and DAO modes and in Brasero but again, the same console screen telling something about 2 skiping non-existing files (I took a photo with my mobile look the attachment). But now after seconds and to my surpise, after the command prompt finally the splash screen appeared and so GDM ! When GNOME finally loaded any crash icon appeared but the 2 non -existing files continue appearing whrn testing Live CD so I'm not sure of installing Ubuntu 9.10 over my Ubuntu 9.04 that works fine to my old 2006 computer...:( BTW The bug reporting tool (name?) collected my system information? I dont see it..Ive a Sempron with 1 DDR RAM so perhaps this has something to do with the 2 misteriorus "non-existing files" ?

Hi Gerard,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 468956

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
