According to the dpkg log file:

Unpacking mysql-server-5.0 (from .../mysql-server-5.0_5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3_i386.deb) ...
Aborting downgrade from (at least) 5.1 to 5.0.

It seems that you had mysql 5.1 already installed. If so downgrading to 5.0 is not possible.

In that case I'm... not happy. Could I have known this? Shouldn't the downgrade be failsafe, I mean warn me that the downgrade would not be possible and refuse to carry it out?

This is exactly what the pre-installation script just did:

Aborting downgrade from (at least) 5.1 to 5.0.

Aparently the software behaved as it should, so I set the bug status to "invalid"

status: Incomplete → Invalid
