blank screen, unable to resume

Recently updated from 9.04 to 9.10 .
I was away for a few minutes and I just saw that the screen went black and I couldn't resume working.
I pressed ctrl-alt-delete several times, tried switching to text login using ctrl-alt-fX but it didn't work. suddently my laptop restarted.
