Bug Description

Binary package hint: pm-utils

Hello, since i upgraded to Karmic Koala the suspend function in Ubuntu does hang my machine
pm-suspend hangs my system badly and repeatable.
similar results do seem to happen when i use s2ram
there is no difference whether i use the suspend button, pm-suspend from the command line or the Icon

it does shut down the Gnome and hangs with a constant blinking cursor on the upper left side
the logs don't give me a hint whcih bring me any further
my setup is Ubuntu 9.10, Dell XPS 1530, Nvidia 185 HW driver and Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver for

one more weired thing is that it does seem to hang the system in a way that i can still call up the different virtual terminals, but i can not log in or do anything (normal keyboard does not seem to respond) ... the only option is to power cycle

here is a copy of the suspend log ... it would be great if any one of you could help ...

This doesn't happen every time but I have seen it more than once, on my HP 6730b laptop, with Intel "Mobile 4 Series Chipset" graphics. Attaching detailed hardware list in case someone needs it.

Have the same problem on my samsung nc-10 but only after I upgraded to 2.6.31-15 kernel. It seems like the power management in Karmic is pants, based on the number of bugs outstanding. Not good considering M$ tends to place a high value on turd polishing and Win7 will probably not have so many issues. Oh well linux has already conceded the netbook segement after a early lead and rocky start. Perhaps by the time the ARM based smartbooks come out these issues will be ironed out.

To correct my earlier comment, this has actually only happened once so far in Karmic. Kernel 2.6.31-14-generic. If anyone has an idea on how to debug the problem, I'm willing to try (I assume this is a kernel issue).

I solved this by removing the SD card that was in the reader. Related to bug #468298

I definitely had no SD card in my reader when this happened to me, but I can also say that it has not happened again yet. I suspend between 2 and 4 times per day, so for me it seems to be a very rare problem.

This happens repeatedly on my Sony Vaio. After coming back from suspend the green light turns on but the machine hangs. I have this problem ever since I upgraded to karmic. I seriously consider falling back to 9.04. It is quite agitating to have to shutdown the laptop instead of suspend.
Does anyone know of a workaround?

I have the same problem. I've test many solutions, but nothing work fine. My computer is a Sony Vaio FW11 laptop.

A new track... when turn off and switch on sound level is always off, deactivate. Could be anything in relation with sound card?

Did anyone found at least some work around for this problem or does nobody care about this bug any more? I have the same problem on my HP Compaq nx9420 laptop (after upgrading from 9.04 suspend hangs my machine every time). I have no card in card reader and the behaviour is still the same even with current kernel 2.6.31-20-generic. After manually turning off the hanged machine and then switching back on sound level is always muted (as "djuez" wrote). When I leave the machine running after it hangs while suspending, it starts the fan at max performance after approx. 10 min. = it looks like something is using CPU heavily - maybe some deadlock/race cond.? Btw hibernation seems to work correctly on my laptop (and when I had 9.04 both hibernation and suspend worked).

Since my last comment I have not seen this hanging problem once in four months on my HP 6730b. I suspend at least once a day. I can only guess it was a fluke or that it has been fixed for me since then.

Suspends OK when I remove the SD card from the built in card reader

bernddude, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Karmic reached EOL on April 30, 2011.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Is this reproducible in the latest release of Ubuntu via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ ?

If so, please execute the following via a terminal in order for the necessary debugging information to be attached:
