Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

Just did a fresh install to checkout Ubuntu 9.10 on a clean drive (have removable HDD). Software Center is unacceptably slow on download and install. Attempted to "install" flashplayer via Software Center but cancelled it after allowing to run for over 10 minutes with only 20% progress. Attempted to use Software Center to "install" Seamonkey Mail Composer and after 12 minutes it's only at 27% progress... I'm hardwired at 100 Mb/s over Cable and can go to the source, download and Install in less than 3 minutes total elapsed time. Have not had this issue using "Add Applications" under 9.04 Jaunty.

Hello,

Can you please go to System > Administration > Software Sources > Download From:

Click "Select best server". A series of pings will be initiated and a new server will be chosen. Try using the software center after that. Please keep us updated.

To do away with the excruciatingly slow download speeds from ubuntu software center, either you include a download accelerator within ubuntu software center so that what can take 10 hours will only take an hour or less given the same internet speed or have an option to download them from an Ubuntu website where you can use a download manager or accelerator to speed up the download speed. This is one thing that turns me off installing software from the ubuntu software center. I would rather have the packages available elsewhere where I can download them quickly and install them in ubuntu software center.

Hi Aurelio, and thanks for your comment. It's very possible that you may be able to improve your software download speed by choosing a server closer to your location. Just open Software Center and choose menu item "Edit"->"Software Sources...". In the dialog that is displayed, select the dropdown menu "Download from", and choose "Other", then choose a server close to your location from the list that is displayed.

If this doesn't improve things, please let us know.

Thanks again!

Hi there

I am comenting here because I have a similar problem on a fresh install of 13.04 64 bits.
When downloading games like Bastion or Legend of Grimrock, it takes ages. The rate is something like 20kb/sec. For a game that weighs about 1.1gb, it is just not acceptable.

Using the same connection, and even downoading at the same time, I can download games at 3mb/sec in Steam for example. Same from the browser.

I have tried the default server, and also tried the one that was proposed when I did the search for best server in software sources.
