Same problem, ubuntu x86_64.
X.org hangs while recieving message and menu open.

xorg can be restarted from tty1 ctrl+alt+F1

Thank you for your bug report, could you try the update on bug #462016 it's supposed to fix this bug too

I also faced something similar today. but in my case I was playing with indicator applet and an incoming message halted my system
