checkbox's video test uses the xrandr command to do its testing. This command utilizes the XRANDR 1.2 feature to do its stuff.

The binary -nvidia driver does not support XRANDR 1.2. It isn't even on their priority list - see http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=nvidia_qa_linux&num=5 the question on the bottom of page 5.

Because of this, checkbox should be configured to not do any testing if the nvidia kernel module is present on the system. In fact, it would be smart to have the test check for if XRANDR is present on :0.0 before running, since there are likely other video drivers out there which lack XRANDR 1.2, but excluding nvidia will at least prevent the vast bulk of mistaken bug reports.

Something needs to be done about this. We get tons of bugreports due to this, not only from nvidia owners but everyone !radeon/!intel. Disabling the screen test from 9.10 completely should be SRUable, right?

I just tried on Lucid with a system containing an nVidia graphics controller and with the nvidia kernel module, both xrandr and the xrandr_cycle script (under /usr/share/checkbox/scripts) seem to run fine. Should any test using xrandr still be disabled when the nvidia kernel module is loaded?

Is this bug still relevant? It was milestoned to *Lucid Alpha 2*
and there has been no progress since.

Maybe set a new milestone , or close the bug?

Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Ubuntu 9.10 reached EOL on April 30th, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.

I will close this bug now. If you are able to reproduce it with a current supported version of Ubuntu, please, create a new one typing "ubuntu-bug checkbox" on a terminal.

Thanks!
