Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

When closing software center during installation of software (download) the window is removed but the process is running.

Expected behavior is that when the application is closed it is really closed. Means no processes running, no locked files (APT).

Show message that installation is going to be canceled or paused due to program closing and allow people to choose.
Please dont take the control over the system / GUI away from the user!

Hi Andrew, Hi Matthew,

the status seems to be incomplete, which information do you need so it isnt "incomplete" anymore and you can process it?

Tibor

I made an initial attempt to specify what should happen a few months ago: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#cancel-bar

It's not very good, though. I need to figure out some other way that (a) lets you cancel tasks that haven't started changing files yet, and (b) doesn't involve an alert.

I've now specified an action bar for the "Progress" section, which would let you cancel all tasks that are safe to cancel. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#cancel-bar> Anyone is welcome to implement it.

Meanwhile, thanks for the report, but I'm marking this Invalid for five reasons. First, it has always been possible to close USC, so "cannot close software center" is not accurate. Second, USC is not the process that installs or removes software, whether it is open or closed, so "the process is running" is not accurate. Third, USC is not the only way to install or remove software, so "no locked files (APT)" is not something USC could ever reasonably achieve. Fourth, showing a confirmation alert is a clue that the design is mistaken, so we shouldn't change the design such that one would be necessary. And fifth, while it is not currently possible to pause tasks, it is possible to cancel them even after USC has closed, by reopening it and going to the "Progress" section.
