No way to switch desktop modes

The desktop switcher was dropped last minute from Karmic, apparently without any testing.

The ability to switch between desktop modes is now gone. This is a major loss of functionality as I assume that many people use external monitors with their netbooks. The UNR desktop is pretty useless and annoying on a 1680x1050 display and the Ubuntu desktop is not very useful on a 1024x600 display. Without this tool the usefulness of UNR is severely limited.

Additionally, when upgrading, the system is left in whatever state it was LAST in. I.e. if you were in desktop mode, you are stuck there with no (simple) way to go back to UNR mode and vice versa. Anyone who upgrades from JJ to KK while in desktop mode will pretty much have lost UNR functionality.

Please look at the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug. Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report. Please continue to report any other bugs you may find.

This is not a duplicate of 463915 which makes no mention of the fact that upgrading from jaunty to karmic while in desktop mode permanently disables UNR mode.

Well, I agree that it is a duplicate of 463915, however, you and the person how reported that bug are stilll left in a lurch without a method to change the desktop modes (you need to get to UNR, he needs to get to Gnome desktop). This bug still needs to be dealt with (either here or in the other bug report).

This bug is a very important regression in Karmic and there is also little information about desktop-switcher dropping from Karmic. I lost UNR mode when upgrading from jaunty to karmic in desktop mode , as well as the person how reported that bug .
