Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When I try to enable Compiz this causes a Kernel Panic on my PC. Same thing happens if I try to boot from CD. I have to use Ubuntu 9.10 with no Compiz. I think that is related to my Intel GMA 950.

***EDITED May 1 2010***
I still having the problem with the final release of Ubuntu 10.04. Only boots with i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa
If I try to start compiz from Terminal I got warnings like this:
"WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXCreatePixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug!"
OpenSUSE users had same problems with these Intel graphic cards, but now it's apparently solved.
I hope to comeback to Ubuntu someday :D
In the mean time I'm still using Mac OS X that's great.

Compiz can't be responsible for a kernel panic, it can only trigger a bug in the kernel or a module. Moving to 'linux' as they should be able to help you figure out where the bug is.

affects: compiz (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

Hi!

If I start compiz then my whole system freezes and nothing worked anymore. After shutting down hardly and rebooting the system compiz is stopped and everything works fine, accept this: With copmiz stopped in the window of the gnome-system-monitor and in the pop-up notifications I only see stripes (see attachment). If I start compiz the gnome-system-monitor looks normal but then my system freezes.
And if I start compiz with a shell I got several warnings. These I'll try to post.

It turns out that my system frezzes if I start another application (e.g. firefox).
And here is what I got from the shell:

The last sentence is a Warning from the window manager and says that the theme "Clearlooks" couldn't be loaded. It couldn't find a valid file for the clearlooks theme.

Hey!

With the libgl1-mesa-swx11 package installed (that removes the libgl1-mesa-glx package) compiz works now. Very slowly though and the CPU is up to 100 %, but it's running.
And I found two other things:
- in /usr/bin/compiz: in line 35 the path has to be "/usr/bin/xfwm4"
- in /usr/bin/compiz-decorator: in line 23 the quotes are missing.

So I think that's not a bug anymore. :-)

bye-bye

Hi Maik,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 464883

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
