Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

Dell E1505 Laptop
Ubuntu 9.10 released Oct. 2009
Gnome-power manager package
Ubuntu was upgraded from version 9.04 which worked okay.
The problem is the computer will not turn off when selecting shut down.
I have to use the power button for a hard shut down.
The computer attempts to shut down but hangs up on the black screen.
The last line of the text displayed on the screen is as follows:
[170.008100] Buffer i/o error on device loop0, logical block 3002663

I have since noticed that the computer shuts down normally every once in a while. Also , when it hangs up on shut down, it is always during "Deactivating Swap".

I upgraded Ubuntu 9.10 from Ubuntu 9.04., but the computer can't shut down properly. It produces the following messages on the screen:

*Shutting down ALSA
*Asking all remaining processes to terminate
*Deconfiguring network interfaces
*Deactiviating SWAP
*[1060.0.36045] Buffer I/O error on device 0
Logical block 2452969

This happens very time I shut down the PC.

This isn't a bug with ubuntu-docs, so I'm reallocating it to Ubuntu itself

I suggest trying #19 listed under Bug#468589. This works very well for me. The computer shuts down as it should.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. Setting this bug duplicate of 468589 .

@Richiegs : your bug seems be distinct from this one. Can you add a new bug report associated with linux package and attach the output of the following commands:

$ cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
$ dmesg > dmesg.log
$ sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Thanks in advance.

affects: ubuntu → linux (Ubuntu)
