I have a Thinkpad T30 and a Dell 960 that both have this issue (or one manifesting in the same way). So far I see only "me too"s. Aside from the repeating error, what information can we provide to help troubleshoot this?

I have the same problem - log flooded with
[21047.836905] VFS: busy inodes on changed media or resized disk sr0
[21047.847688] VFS: busy inodes on changed media or resized disk sr0
[21048.881934] VFS: busy inodes on changed media or resized disk sr0
and no recognition of media inserted in the drive. Eject works, so some kind of connection does exist.

The DVD drive has not worked on the previous Ubuntu (8.04) either but I works under M$ Windows.

If somebody needs more information, just ask. Otherwise just count this as one more vote.

/Patrik
