Bug Description

This other bug report documents a case in which checkbox causes a kernel oops when the ibm-acpi drivers are in use:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/430361

I confirmed for myself that this happens during the audio test. This comment summarizes the issue and links to related change in the ibm-acpi driver:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/430361/comments/16

It seems the recommended fix is for applications such as checkbox to no longer make calls to enable or disable hotkey functionality when ibm-acpi is active.

Hi Mark,

In order to keep this bug open, can you check if this happens when running checkbox on Natty (on the same machine of course)?

Thanks,

This is not a checkbox bug... the issue appears to be in something checkbox calls... the particular reports revolve around the Audio Playback/Record tests which call aplay and use the gstreamer python lib...

This was confirmed back in Karmic, apparently fixed to some degree, but perhaps the root cause for THIS instance is gstreamer.

FWIW, I have seen this at least as far as Maverick (maybe Natty, but I don't recall offhand for sure) on my Thinkpad x201 during normal operations.

In any case, there's nothing to be done for checkbox that I can see to resolve this as the issue is more deep than that.
