Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

On occasions, not always, the application "gnome-panel" gets stuck when showing a modal dialog, particularly with java 1.6.0_12 and _16, both on 386 and amd64.

Other applications like Wink (for creating animated tutorials as a flash .swf) also lock up gnome-panel on occasions.

The simple solution is to control+alt+F2 to a tty, login, then killall gnome-panel, then control+alt+F7 to return to the X11 desktop.

The bug is a total killer for ubuntu beginners who don't know how to work around it.

I have observed the bug in 9.04 and in 9.10.

I am not a gnome developer. Nor do I have infinite time to learn all the caveats of doing what you proposed me to do.

I reported this bug to bring it to the attention of Ubuntu developers, and in the hope that knowing about it would be useful to you all.

The bug exists. Closing this bug report does not alter this fact.
