Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When starting on the newest kernel on karmic (-14), everything goes well until X begins to start. First I see a blinking cursor, which then freezes (as is usual, I assume that's when X tries to start), then the screen turns blank.

After a little while, the blinking cursor comes back, freezes again (I assume X failed to start and is trying vesa mode), and majorly corrupts the screen. then X either starts (with only a cursor, 6 copies of it, all with stripes on them), or it doesn't and the console only shows a cursor which is shown in 2 places. Everything except the screen works fine (Alt+E restarts X, doesn't change the situation).

Booting with i915.modeset=0 is the only way to get into the system.

Removing the vesa driver from the system eventually lets X start with KMS. Attached is the log for the first failed start (X starts on the second try). The normal log is EXACTLY the same up to that point, which then starts adding hal devices (the first is the tablet pen device). Is this a problem in VESA itself possibly?

This issue was reported against karmic, so can you confirm if this issue exists with the most recent Lucid Lynx 10.04 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/ . Thanks in advance.
