Keyboard layout view seems broken

Bug Description

When viewing the keyboard layout, either through right-clicking on the keyboard indicator applet and choosing "layout view", or by using the layout selector in the keyboard preferences, it appears mostly black with only a few grayed keys (and one red square). This seems to be the case for every layout chosen.

If you could provide a screenshot it would be great.
There is a way to add attachments to reports, see the link to the left "Add Attachment".

Also mention if this problem is specific to a certain keyboard layout.

Feel free to add screenshots that you believe will help to demonstrate the issue.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using?

Sorry for posting the first screenshot twice, Launchpad seems to be hammered right now and I got an error 503 the first time.

This happens for me on a regurlarly updated Dapper install. The original install was a Breezy one, updated to Dapper somewhere around Flight 7. Right now, my setup should be similar to the Dapper RC, there is no update waiting to be done. I saw the correct layout view at least a few times; it broke for me around the beta release.

All layouts are affected.

Thanks for the screenshots, they are useful.

I think the issue is related to the upgrade from Breezy. I have Dapper (installed Flight3) and it appears ok.

The applet that draws the keyboard parses the configuration files from Xorg. Between Breezy and Dapper there have been updates for these files.

Have a look at /etc/X11/xkb/ and see whether the files look ok.
You may also try to reinstall "xkeyboard-config".
Sorry for not being able to help more.

When I first updated to Dapper around Flight 6 or Flight 7, the layout view was ok. It's a later update, around the beta, which broke it for me.

Reinstalling xkeyboard-config had no effect. The files in /etc/X11/xkb/ seem alright, as far as I can tell (no broken symlink).

But yes, if I'm the only one being affected, it may be that as I upgraded from Breezy, some "residual" package didn't get uninstalled and conflict with a new Dapper package.

I am now using Feisty (after having updated to Dapper and then Edgy) and the keyboard layout seems perfectly fine to me now.
